Sarbananda Sonawal, who was already chief minister, and Himanta Biswa Sharma, who played a key role in the bjp’s development by forming the North East Democratic Alliance, were both competing to take over the chief ministership.

He is the coordinator of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for north-eastern states and the Health Minister of Assam.
