Chennai: 161/2 lakh people have been affected by corona infection in Tamil Nadu so far. Of these, 21/2 lakh are undergoing treatment. More than 30,000 people are infected daily. Hundreds of lives are lost every day.
The beds of government and private hospitals are overflowing with patients due to corona spread. There has been a plight of patients waiting day and night, holding their lives at the hospital door for beds. The number of patients being treated with artificial respiratory devices has continued to increase due to corona infection, reduced oxygen levels in the body.
Due to this, the use of oxygen cylinders in government and private hospitals, 108 government ambulances and private ambulances has increased manifold. The Government of India subsequently increased the oxygen allocation for Tamil Nadu from 280 tonnes to 419 tonnes. Oxygen is also being obtained by rail from West Bengal and Odisha.
Patients whose health has deteriorated due to corona are given ‘Remdesivir’ medicine. The medicine is being allotted to the States by the Central Government. So there is a shortage of this medicine and people are on the lookout. At this stage, the Department of Medicine and Health is taking steps at the behest of First Minister Mk Stalin to get the medicine in hospitals where patients are being treated. The Government of India is providing locally manufactured vaccines such as Covishield and Covaxine to the State Governments for preventing the death of corona infection.
The central governments can procure the vaccine for the under 45 years of age. Subsequently, the Government of Tamil Nadu has taken steps to purchase 31/2 crore vaccines in 3 months through ‘International Tender’ at the behest of Chief Minister Mk Stalin.
The World Health Organization has warned that corona’s potency will continue for a few months under these circumstances. The Government of Tamil Nadu has focused on the production of oxygen, vaccine and medicines in Tamil Nadu, which are considered to be the most essential life saving products from corona.
